Planting Red Raspberries

I have a 10 x 30 garden section that I would like to plant some red raspberries in.
What is the best way to cover between the rows and between the plants to prevent weed growth, but at the same time allow for the shoots to make it through the ground

compost, lots and lots of compost...oh, and composted chicken "stuff"...they love that!
