Genetically modified fruit trees?

Hi
I wanted to buy a fruit tree, probably pear, but I wondered about these GMO plants. Ive seen pictures of square trees! I went to Home Depot and similar stores and asked about there trees but they did not know. I called some nurseries and all of them except one could not give me a straight answer.

So do GMO fruit trees exist yet for sale? I live in Canada

Also how come fruit trees cost double the price in nurseries vs Home Depot type stores. The trees look similar!

Thanks
Carlos

Well, technically speaking: some trees are genetically modified from inbreeding but, I've not heard of any molecularly genetically modified trees. If I have some time, I'll do a journal search to find out.

But, the easiest way for you to find this out would be to call the Herbarium at the Nearest University and ask there. In fact, I'll do that for you right now. (Seeing that I'm at a University :) )

....Okay, I've done so but, had to leave a message. I'll get back to you later.
