Holes in raspberry patch

I love your site! My question is regarding my raspberry patch that is maybe 10 years old and has always produced many new shoots each year. This spring we noticed unusual large holes in the patch- meaning no new shoots in areas about 3'x3'. It's like they just decided to not shoot up any new plants this year. They have typically sent up new plants everywhere- the gravel, the grass... Not now. Any ideas?

There could be a warning notice to you here WB.
Usually if some of your spawn dies other mother plsnts nearby quickly fill the space available.
One big problem could be that Phytophora has set in on your patch.
Often it follows a particularly wet period when the plants feet have got too soggy over a longish period. Something rasps will not tolerate.
If the patch should spread slowly further then I would strongly suspect this infection.
There is no really effective control and the best treatment is to start a new patch elseware. Useing new plants...NOT PLANTS FROM THE OLD SITE.
If it is this then it helps a lot if you plant the rasps on a raised ridge like a larger form of potato ridge.
This keeps the plants roots dryer in heavy wet periods.

Hope this helps
