Growing avocado tree from seed-HELP!

Please help-I have taken several avocado seed from the avocados I have purchased at the grocery store-dried the seed out, put the seed in water with toothpicks to hold up-but none of the seeds have produced a root! Am I doing something wrong? I have put the larger end of the seed in the water as told-no root. Any suggestions?

I've posted quite a few times about growing avocados from seed, some in detail. Try the Search the Forum with "avocados" for keyword and "applestar" as the author. It's getting late on this side of the continent and I'm not up to searching and linking.
