Cherry pits

Hey! I know that much of the store-bought fruit that we eat is hybrid, but I was curious, Has anyone ever tried to germinate a cherry pit from like a Bing cherry or other cherry as such? 
I have tried with little success but, in the past I haven't had the proper set up.
Of course, if you grow fruit from a pit you will be growing a tree that will not come true with the fruit.
