SW Virginia - Learn to Graft

This will give you much better results than starting seeds:

Extension/Master Gardeners is offering several Learn-to-Graft Workshops. Scion wood from about 20 old varieties is available. Rootstock is M-111. Cost is $2.00 per rootstock.

Reservations required. Different phone numbers for the two dates.

Both held at Foggy Ridge Cider in Dugspur VA (west of Roanoke).

April 10, 2010 276-730-3110. (Carroll County Extension)
April 24, 2010 540-745-9310. (Floyd County Extension)

At our training session I got Grimes Golden, Esopus Spitzenburg, and Ashmead's Kernal - I hope they'll cross pollinate - I should've gotten a crab or a Golden Delicious too I suppose.

Also available (I'm working from memory) Mother, Smokehouse, Fall River, Wolf River, Cox's Orange Pippin, Futsu (maybe Mutsu?), Arkansas Black, Black Limbertwig, Stamen, many more.

Some of you are not too far - and it's springtime in the mountains.

nice. I'd probably be into it, if I wasn't already taking a fruit class that includes grafting in asheville. cheers!

You're really close-by. We collect scion wood several places during pruning - let me know if you want to come along or have me look for any particular variety next year.

will keep that in mind, thanks. there's lots of varieties I'm partial to, I'm sure something will suggest itself.
