Any problem with pruning a pomegranite?

The pomegranite I planted four years ago is growing like something you might encounter on the borders of Mordor - a dense tangle with long, sharp spikes. I would like to thin it out a bit, particularly the interior. Does anyone know a reason not to? Thanks.

Although it doesn't provide specifics, Sunset's Western Garden Book says that the Pomegranate "Naturally grows as a rounded plant to 15-20 feet tall and broad, though it is often kept pruned to about 10 feet high and wide."

Sounds like you can have a good, serious pruning session to me.
