I have a large cherry tree in my garden here in England. The only thing that seems to affect the tree is black fly. Not sure whether you have these in New York. However, if it is black fly, it will ruin your fruit. You will notice black spots appearing on your cherries. If this is the case, the fruit is infected and you can't eat it.
If this has only just appeared, you may be able to buy a spray to rid the black fly. Maybe cut off a couple of leaves and take them to a specialist gardener or garden centre and ask for advice. Good luck.

The pest is actually called 'black fly'. I don't know of any other name for it.
You can buy a pesticide spray to rid your tree of this fly. I know that if it gets really infested, all your cherries will be ruined.
Ask at your local gardening store and see if you can buy something to clear them away.
I know many people don't like to use these type of treatments but I have had my tree now for a good few years and spraying with soapy water won't kill the flies.
