Strawberries in a container

We planted strawberries in a half wiskey barrel last summer. Two each june and ever bearing. They sent out runners and were doing well. I could see they were green through the winter, when the snow melted off them.
Now there doesn't seem to be anything left of them. I didn't mulch them or anything, just let them be.

Did they freeze or is it just not time for them to come up yet? I can't find anything on when strawberries come up in my area (nw Iowa zone 4b).

Any info would be greatly appritiated.

It's possible that the roots froze, if you left it outdoors all winter. Container plants are susceptible that way. For outdoor container culture, it's usually best to select plant varieties that will survive in a zone colder than the one where you live. Just my thoughts, anyway.
