Seaweed composting!

My Japanese neighbor swears by it. He goes to the beach every spring and brings back a truckload of seaweed. He then puts a few pieces under each plant in his garden.
Has anyone ever done this or heard of this?
I'm sure its helpful but to drive 3 hours to the beach is it worth it?
Will it help the plant that much?

I mix kelp meal as part of my organic fertilizer mix. My plants usually have very healthy growth but there is too much going on to know what contribution the kelp meal is making.

Seaweed is good stuff for your garden. It is rich in trace minerals and low in cellulose so it breaks down readily. It has many micro nutrients in forms that plants can easily use. However, since I garden 1000 miles from the nearest ocean, I would say there is really nothing in seaweed that can't come from other sources, if you don't have ready access to the seaweed.
