Japanese Maple needs reshaping

Hello, I'm new to this forum so forgive me if this is in the wrong section.

I just purchased an old home with old gardens. One of the nice bits is an older Japanese Maple that has been very badly pruned. It has a large trunk (probably 5-6" thick at least) so I know it's been in its present location quite a while.

The sad part is that I think the gardener has been trimming it with the hedge clippers once a month for years--completely bowl shaped on top and very dense, very little foliage lower on the tree. I've put a stop to this and already it's attaining a slightly more natural shape.

I figure I need someone who really knows what they're doing to prune and reshape this tree. I've spent enough time in Japan to love these trees and this unnatural shape just looks awful!

Can anyone recommend someone I can hire, or perhaps a kindly gardener would like to come show me how?? I can promise a fine wine to lubricate your shears... I'm in Daly City.

Thanks in advance.

kginsf,

Try here. Although that section does not seem to get a lot of activity you may get lucky. There is also the Tree and Shrub Forum.
