Lace leaf Japanese Maple Question

Hi, I moved into a home last year with a very healthy Lace Leaf Japanese Maple Tree in the front yard. I live in SC and this year the tree began looking beautiful a couple of weeks ago. However, last week, we had a cold spell and some nights got to just around freezing temperature. I am worried about this tree because now the leaves are dead and I was wondering what to expect from it this year and next.

I am new at gardening and now I realize I probably should have covered this tree during the cold spell. Am I right?

Thanks for any info.

When we lived in Portland, OR we had a Japanese Laceleaf. Every year, in mid-November, I used to cover the ground around it with newspaper and then cover the newspaper with rocks. And that tree lasted for the 15 years we lived in that house, including many winter freezes. Of course, this isn't of any help to you now, but if it does dies, and you get a new one, I would recommend it for this year's winter.

Good Luck! They are beautiful trees.
