Japanese Garden with existing plants and trees?

Hello all,

I have access to a small garden with the dimensions of 4 x 2.4 m, it belongs to my grandfather and he's really protective of his garden plants, however he's ok with a minor redesign. The garden contains some roses, jasmine, grapevine and a pear tree. I was wondering if any of the plants are suitable in a japanese garden? I'm going for a dense, shady and natural look (almost like a forest) for the space.

In case the plants I mentioned are fitting, what would go well with them?

hi goldfish
Tradtional j garden don`t use plant/tree you have mentioned.
Reasons)
1) avoid thorny tree/plant for easy maintenance
2) tree should able to take hard pruning to keep good propotion of the
garden and tree/plant.
3)For a small garden, be careful to use vine。Any Vine can be monster
4) Roses won‘t fit for shady and natual look garden, I think.

Talk to your grand father and ask for his sugestion. I hope you can make up new garden with your grand father.
