Transplanting a Japanese Maple

Hello All, I am new to this forum and am a very inexperienced gardener.
I want to transplant an Acer Palmatum Orange Dream from a raised bed into a pot. I understand that the perfect soil would be a sandy loam. How do I create this soil from scratch? :?
Thank You.

Hi Duncan,
As a guideline for bonsai, smaller and larger ones, the soil I use as a standard mixture is 1/3 potting-soil, 1/3 sand (or grit) and 1/3 clay or loam, that we find plenty in our garden and surrounding.
I guess you can get the loam in any garden center, but perhaps also around your home !?
Then twice a year I feed it some organic (cow) fertilizer.

Hi Duncan,
I use 60% eracacious potting compost and 40% pea gravel to pot my Japanese maples and keep the compost damp but NOT WET

Yep, like koiboy states "but NOT WET".....
Be aware for this to work the pot must have a drainage hole.
