What are they doing????

I've been trying to attract more birds to our yard this year, and so far it's working :) Earlier today I found these six little birds in the garden, rolling in the dirt. What on earth are they doing??

Bathing. Sparrows and other small passerine birds take dustbaths fairly frequently, especially when open water isn't available.

I provide several water bathing spots for the birds, but there is a dusty, dry spot deep under the eaves of my house. It's protected by a large shrub, and that's where the birds dust bathe. :)
