bird baths

How can I keep my concrete bird bath from freezing and breaking during the cold weather? Also I have a bird bath that leaks and don't want to throw it away. Can I coat the inside with something that won't hurt the birds? Help! It is getting cold outside. :?:

You can purchase a bird bath heater. I prefer the type that has a thermostat so it turns off and on when needed. I use them for my birdbaths. I prefer this flat type.

Here's another model.

If your leaky birdbath has a crack you could use a marine silicone caulk.

Another option is to drain the water for the winter. Water expands when it freezes thus applying pressure on the concrete and breaking it.
