No Vacancy!

Three of our bird houses are occupied. Two of the houses have five blue bird eggs in each. This house has five chickadee hatchlings. Three are sleeping behind these two hungry ones.

Unreal what a difference 11 or 12 days makes. Will soon be hanging out the vacancy sign.

These are Carolina Chickadees from the photo above.

Also have two families of Eastern Blue Birds in two nesting boxes. The eggs just hatched this past week.

I built the front of the birdhouse with a hinge at top, so that it swivels outward for easy clean out. The birds pay me almost no attention, except when very young they ask for food, if I take a few photos. Last I checked all families have moved out, so the vacancy sign is back in place.

Sounds like a good idea, would you mind showing a picture of the birdhouse in full?

In the 1970's I chose to do a research project on the eastern bluebird. In doing that project Dr. Lawrence Zeleny's work came to my attention. My bluebird house is based upon his dimensions, but the panels have been modified to allow for the pivoting front of the nest box.

Here is a design that looks much like Zeleny's, I think maybe Lenker worked with Zeleny. This design has a pivot placed on the side panel. IMO a pivoting side is essential for easy clean out, plus allows the observer to monitor progress of the nest and hatchlings.

Here are a couple of photos of one of my houses. I vary the hole size depending upon the species that I wish to attract.
