Hornworms etc moth larvae pests and gourds, tobacco, etc

I'm seeing a LOT more hornworms in my garden this year.
It finally occurred to me to question whether the phenomenon is related to the fact that I'm growing 3 varieties of gourds. All extensive, garden swallowing vines, all flowering very well... At night! ... And friting very well.)

I was looking at four o clocks and nicotiana to plant next spring, and the descriptions said "attracts hawk moths, sphinx moths, and other night flying moths" ...

Hawk moths = cutworms
Sphinx moths = hornworms

This would apply to Moonflower vines too.... :o

Very interesting-- I grow lots of nicotiana and I always grow some moonflower (which is still blooming despite heat and drought)...

I'm not actually out in my garden at night much to watch for things like that. Should work on getting out in the dark more!

I did have a couple (that I know of! :) ) hornworms this year, which I've never seen in my yard before.

Not sure I'm willing to give up my night bloomers though and the braconid wasps seemed to take care of the hornworms just fine!
