Bees and maybe a nest or nesting activity?

One of our most abundant and active bees looks like a regular bumblebee but is about 1/3 to 1/2 their size. Don't know what they are, but the other day noticed six to ten flying around and digging in the soil around the base of a daylily clump. These in the photo, less than a foot from the daylily, appear to be chewing/harvesting some wood, maybe to make pulp for a nest? Anyway, I see these all spring and summer but have never noticed what may be nesting activity. Anyone familiar with the species and/or have an idea about their nesting habit.

I have both honey bees and bumble bees in my back yard. I love fragrant flowering plants so I asked for it. I miss my Hummingbirds though; haven't put out the feeder since I have the Dove family on my patio. But they should be gone soon and up goes the Hbird feeder. Yipee!!! :D

They might be mason bees.
