Clearly sick tree, How do I fix it?

Can anyone diagnose and cure my one and only tree? Take a look at the pics below. It rains here in central Iowa about every other day. So it is getting plenty of water.

There are clearly some slash marks at the bottom near the trunk.

What should I do? Thanks

I can't be of much help here, because I can't tell what kind of tree it is. However, I don't think those are "slash marks" that you see on the lower trunk. I think it's just the bark developing. I could easily be wrong, though. Sorry!
