Hedges

Contrary to common belief, the fall is actually the best time to search out and buy any conifers such as Cedar Primadellas, smurags (sp?) and so on. My father and his business partner would not guarantee their trees when people insisted on buying them in the spring or summer. And I won't even get into the countless dead hedges I have seen due to a premature transplant.

Anyway, if you want to plant a hedge, the fall is the time to do it.

And while on the topic of hedges: the sunflower Helianthus maximillani is a deer proof plant that makes a lovely, edible hedge that feeds both humans and birds. The deer will also not cross through the hedge as well. (Or so I've read)

Good advice, that. (And it's Thuja occ. Smargd, although that's the plant registration name; I prefer the cultivar name 'Emerald Green')

Hedges is an interesting topic; I see badly pruned ones all the time. Perhaps I should add a Hedges article to the site...

All in favor?
