Help with our dogwoods

We have 2 small dogwood trees, one white, one pink. They are about 5 years old. They are slow growing and do not bloom well. Any advice on how to care for them? Any ideas on how to give them a growth spurt?

They don't like wet nor dry feet. Hopefully sun is not a problem, but they bloom is forests. Dig a trench aound the trees and add some compost or manure and bonemeal and then backfill and water and use the excess soil as a saucer.
