Japanese knotweed

Assuming most here know this is an invasive species and extremely difficult to eradicate, this post will be quite different.

I live on a dirt road surrounded by thousands of acres of hardwoods. The edges of my yard go right up to the brush/woods. There are patches of knotweed around here but they are not bothering me. What is happening is they are suddenly DYING for some reason.

I just noticed this yesterday, a few days ago they were fine. These are on the edge of my lawn; there is a large patch a few hundred feet down the road and most of them look like this also.

Googling knotweed all I found was how to kill them, lol. Nothing about what diseases etc. they might get.

Anybody know what's going on?
