tree damage

A coworker of mine just planted 4 American Yellowwood trees and 1 of them was damaged shortly after planting. We are trying to figure out what happened. There have been deer sightings in the neighborhood. Has anyone had this experience? Does this look like something a deer would do? Can the damaged tree be saved? Can something be done to protect the trees from further damage?

Oh no! I hope the tree isn’t girdled— bark stripped all the way around. Even if not, that looks like a significant damage.

I’m not familiar with typical deer damage, but it reminds me of how at the zoo, they have sturdy wire/iron fence surrounding trees — from ground to very high up the trunk — and at the local wildlife refuge, they put entire young trees and shrubs inside a cage to protect them.

Yes indeed, damage from deer rubbing their antlers on it. (Would have been cool to watch!)

Here's a little article about it and about what to do:
