Royal Smoke Tree

IMG_20190429_162527_hdr.jpg
Our smoke tree developed a weird type growth at very top. Noticed it this winter and spring when branches were bare. Any idea? I removed it to take the pictures attached. Thank you

I’m not familiar with this plant.

Is this the only one or are there others? What do “normal” branch tips look like. What is it about this one that is different?

The branches of the tree look like normal spring bare branches of any tree. This tree usually leafs out in late May here. This just looks very different than anything I've seen before.

I suppose it could be gall — usually some kind of insect has laid egg(s) in the plant and the plant has grown extra cells encysting the foreign matter.

I think it’s probably simplest to just snip that part off. Cut it open as a post mortem examination if you are curious?
