Reviving an old leylandii

Took on a 50 year old Leylandii hedge that is 30 metres long and 10 feet high two years agi. Basically everything was wrong with it, had to remove about twenty semi mature ash and sycamore trees, was covered in ivy, had overhang from the top, brambles in the base and dead patches ( not from virus but sloppy cutting).

Two years on the hedge is looking pretty good except the odd wooden dead patch.

(1) Will it encourage sideways growth if I punch out the wooden dead patches because I'm wondering if the wood is a barrier to new foliage.
(2) I have been using the entire base of the hedge as a place to compost the weeds, grass cuttings and perennial clearings as a mulch to kill the brambles and feed the hedge.

It seems to like it so far, but is it a good idea long term.
