Cherry Laurel Prunus laurocerasus - not happy!

Hello there,
We have just sadly had to lose a huge magnificent horse chestnut tree which dominated the garden and put part of it in semi-shade for most of the time. It looks like our small 'tree' Cherry Laurel - Prunus laurocerasus - which is about 10 feet tall has taken this sudden extra light and exposure badly. Most of the leaves have dropped and the ones remaining looks unhappy. I can't yet see new growth and desperately hope it's not going to die.
Can anyone offer hope - or ideas as to what it would welcome to help it adjust?
Thank you in anticipation. :D

Hi - I live in Derbyshire and the weather is very wet and quite cold - about 8 degrees. Thanks
