Our cercis siliquastrum, planted last year, has two wounds through the bark.
Is this canker? Should we cut out the damaged part? Or replace the tree? Or try dabbing on Arbrex?
All ideas gratefully received!

The top picture is just a damaged area that appears to be healing nicely but will take a few more years to completely close over. The bottom picture is a damaged area that was healing but the bark is dying or has been peeled off on the one side. If the damage goes most of the way or all the way around the trunk then the upper part of the tree will die. You can prune that area off at the branch below the damage and the tree will eventually regrow. Cut to the longer branch below the damage, not the cut off branch at the bottom part of the damage. Wait until the tree goes dormant before pruning.
