What is this and how do I trim it?!

I recently moved in to a house and this tree(?) was in the backyard. I am taking the rodey (to the left) out, but wondering how to trim/maintain this thing. Any insight as to what it is and/or pruning techniques would be greatly appreciated. For scale, this thing is about 4ft tall, so maybe 5.5ft wide. Thanks all!

A little hard to tell from the picture, but I think it is a Japanese maple dissectum -- cut leafed Japanese maple:

leaves would look about like this: [only of course yours are green]

the whirligig seeds on the end are a giveaway for maple:

Here's a little article on pruning them:

Now that you know what it is, you can look up more. Welcome to the Forum! :)
