how to avoid hedges turning into small tree.

Hi

My front hedges (Clusia) are about a year old.

I've heard rumors of clusia hedges growing long like a small tree.

How can I avoid this? The reason for my hedges are mainly for privacy, so I would like full green shrubs from the ground up.

any feedback would be appreciated.

A lot will depend on the variety...but in general it means regular trimming to force the shoots to keep dividing and forming a dense ' hedge'. Once a plant has been allowed to produce a strong central leader it can take a long time to get it back.

Also, as with any hedge, be sure you prune it so it is a bit wider at the bottom than the top:

Otherwise the branches at the bottom are shaded out and lose their leaves. Then you get something like this:
