any suggestions to get spreading yews to fill inward

We planted spreading yews 2 Falls ago. Then we got 20+feet of snow that winter, and they were crushed. We saved several with pruning off the dead branches, the rest were replaced (that is the photo of the very nice looking full one). The original ones have continued to grow, but they have not filled in the gaping spaces left by the weight of the snow. How can I get new growth in there? I heard something about kind of binding them up around the outside with stretchy garden twine for many months, do you think this will work? Or do they need some kind of serious pruning? Please help!
