Its a shrub. It needs to have a five inch trunk at chest high (5Ft) to be a tree.

Wow that was really interesting! I was zooming in trying to see more clearly because your photo of Mountain Laurel didn't look like what I think of as Mountain Laurel --- and I spotted the swallowtail butterfly btw :D

I tried searching for southern then northern mountain laurel, but both searches yielded Kalmia latifolia which is MY Mountain Laurel that doesn't look like yours, then I spotted a reference to TEXAS Mountain Laurel -- Ah HA!

The scientific name of the Texas Mt. Laurel is Sophora secundiflora :arrow: https://bexar-tx.tamu.edu/homehort/archi ... in-laurel/
