Chestnut Trees - tap root?

Does anyone know if American chestnut trees have a tap root? If so, how intense? Last fall I came across a survivor tree with a small grove of Chinese chestnuts nearby, no doubt cross pollinating. Anyway I collected many of the nuts from the American tree and have already stratified and sprouted a few. Just need to know how long I can keep them in pots?
