How to Encourage Growth in Escalonia Rubra?

Hey everyone.. 2 years ago I moved into a house that needed privacy ASAP. I planted approx 20 Escalonia Rubra shrubs (the big ones) around the perimeter of my house (they were about 1ft tall each) when I first moved in at about 4 ft apart. They seem to be growing rather slow (I feed them monthly). I was wondering if cutting the flowers off would encourage faster growth? PS. I live in Humboldt Co. California at approx 7 miles inland so I have a very maritime climate with about 6 hours of sun daily with temps in the low 70s daily in the summer and 50s and 60s in winter along with a few frosty mornings.. Thanks
