Looking to plant shrubs, need advice

Hi, I have about a 5sqm patch in the corner of our garden which I want to cover with shingle of some sort and plant a few shrubs.
Would just like to know the best way to go about this and what sort of shrubs would be best.
Is it best to lay some landscaping fabric so weeds don't come through?
And if so, do I just cut a hole where I want a shrub?
Thanks, James

Hi James :D

Yes to the fabric. It will help to keep the weeds down but won't stop them completely. Give yourself a nice thick layer of gravel too as it just looks awful if there are patches where you can see the fabric coming through. You need to make sure the area is quite level as well as gravel will slide on the fabric.

Not a hole as such but a cross. Try and make it as small as is possible to get the shrub in. Once the shrub is planted cut a little circle round the trunk of the shrub so the fabric is not touching it and will lie flat so it cannot be seen once the gravel is on.
As for the shrubs it depends on several things. Your soil type (clay, chalk etc.) Your aspect ( sunny, shade, part shade) And your own preference. Do you want architectural, flowers, evergreen?
