Hi there,
Can anyone help identify this tree please and why it's going brown from the bottom up? We moved into the property a few months ago and looked ok then. We also have a laylandi at the front which looks really patchy and bald any help much appreciated! We are based in the UK.
You have junipers.
There are several reasons why they brown out from insects to disease, but the most common reason is that they just haven't been pruned properly. It does take a bit of skill to do it right. It doesn't look like they have been pruned for awhile. I would hire a good landscaper to prune out the dead wood and shape the hedge. The bottom will be bare, it is too late to do much about that. Once it has been shaped, you should be able to maintain it.
Most hedges should be pruned in a pyramidal shape with the top angled slightly inward (a pyramid). Most people do it the opposite way and make the top wider. This leads to less sun getting to the lower leaves and bare bottoms.
