Japanese Plum tree now a bush

The Halloween 2011 storm in NY destroyed my Japanese plum tree. Now in its place are two bushes, one green and one Japanese Plum color. You can see in the picture that the plum colored one is right next to the stump.

I assume I should remove one of the two? Any reason I should pick one over the other? Thanks!

If the original tree was a red-leaf cultivar, the green is the root-stock struggling back.

I'm really not sure, but my guess is that it’s growing back from the root stock. What you should do is a question of how patient you are. Some people would just dig it out and start over, but others (like me), would wait and see what comes of it. It might be interesting to see how it turns out.
