Can someone identify this tree?

Hi All,

Can someone identify this tree for me? I love it. Last year it was being choked by an invasive weed that I've been battling, which cause parts of it to get sick and not bloom. Do you think it will regenerate if I keep the weed at bay?

Thanks!
Lisa

How big is this one? It looks like Mountain Laurel -- a shrub that is related to rhododendron. But I've seen ancient rhododendrons at an arboretum that had trunks of something like 6" diameter and branches arching over the path....

Yup ... kalmia/ mountain laurel. Lucky you! I think they are beautiful and have tried several times to grow one, but they just have to have acidic soil. No matter what I try to do to my alkaline soil, eventually they just curl up and die.

Oh wow! That happens to be our state flower (I live in CT). How cool! Think it will rebloom where it hadn't this year now that I'm keeping an eye on that weed?

Thanks for IDing it! :-)
