Will it live or is it dead?

I transplanted an American beech from the woods to my lawn last winter. This spring and early summer it had green leaves and we had plenty of rain. Then late summer it got hot and fairly dry. The leaves turned brown and most fell off. My question is: Is it dead since the leaves fell so early or is it dormant until next spring? The tree is about 2-3 ft tall. Also, it's early fall here in zone 7-8 and other trees still have green leaves. I'm worried it didn't survive. Thanks.
