How to trim tree?

Our area had a big drought last year. I have a black oak tree out front that suffered along with many other trees. This year, many branches have leaves part way out, but the outer parts of the branches are barren. It appears that the ends of many of these branches will not green again. Should I cut off the ends of these branches (I'm familiar with trimming out dead branches but have never cut off ends like this before).

Thanks for your advice.

You could prune it back. Watering it more would be my choice. It will shed twigs that are dead.

Thanks, GT. Yes, I'll definitely water it this year. Unfortunately I didn't know to do that last year. (To my knowledge, we've never had a drought like that before).

I think maybe I'll just let any dead twigs fall.

Thanks again.
