Pine trees
We are cutting down an old old tree in our front yard and want to replace it with a pine tree. What breed would be the best for full sun on the west side of our house? Is it best to start with a seedling or maybe on that has grown 4-5 feet already?
do you specifically mean "pine tree" or is the thought "evergreen"?
if you're settled specifically on pine, check with the local ag extension service to determine if the area has been infested with pine borers / etc and what species is more resistant to local pests/diseases.
Google "pine tree pests nebraska" - youse guys got a few pickles loose out there.
"evergreen" opens up a lot more types - firs, cedars, hollies, redwoods, /etc etc

Please be VERY careful about planting a pine tree.. The roots are very destructive - will break up a concrete drive. Also pine straw faling on your roof can do lots of damage to shingles. If you have lots of property then a pine tree is great. I love pine straw for bed mulch. The best for weed control. Also looks and feels very nice as a dressing for a garden path.
Please do some research first. Pines can be a wonderful addition to a large yard but they can also be a real pain in the butt if planted in the wrong place.
Good luck
