Tree dying back

So, I have an oak tree in a bucket since last summer. It lost its leaves in early fall due to heat and probably the stress from transplanting it.
It stayed alive till fall and I put it in the shed so it would not freeze the dirt solid in the bucket.
Now I see it is dying back about 8". The tree is just 2 foot tall and a stick. Do I trim it back below the die back or do I leave it. The buds do not act like they are swelling yet.
I am afraid it will continue to die back.

I wouldn't mess with it until you see which parts are alive when it starts leafing out.
