angel trumpet

My Angel trumpet has waited very late in the season to bloom; though it is
absolutely full of blooms it is fortunate that we have not had any frost or
it would not have had time to open all the blooms. Is this common? Since we
live in Zone 7 I have to cut it back almost to the ground and cover to keep it
from freezing. Is there something I can do to get the new growth in the Spring
to come to a Y sooner so that it might bloom earlier? Hope there is someone
who can help me with this.

Yup, don't cut it down as drastically and bring it indoors for the winter. It is a tropical. Even though you have succeeded in keeping it alive through your winters, it really doesn't like it that cold. I have one that I bring in every winter (I'm a zone colder than you, so leaving it out is not an option). It does well indoors with supplemental light and daily misting.

I kept mine in pots (also as in ground was completely out of the question)

cut back leaving about 18" of stem, kept fairly dry over the winter but come June:
