Trimming evergreens that haven't been trimmed in years

Hello. I have several evergreens on my property that haven't been trimmed for years. I am not sure what species they are.

I watched a video on trimming evergreens and it said to take one third of the new growth and none of the old wood. It said that not trimming for years would make the upper branches take over the lower and that you would lose lower branches over 8-10 years. Well, I haven't lost any lower branches, but the mid to high branches are certainly more pronounced.

Any tips as to what course of action I should take from here? Thanks in advance.

Different evergreens require different techniques for trimming. Find out what you have and we can see which course to take from there.
