Does my cypress have cankers? (pics)

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I know next to zero about gardening. My gf got me this little cypress yesterday and I've noticed not all is well with it. could you tell me if it's cankers or if it's just that it has not been taken good care of? any recommendations on what to do on either case would be very much appreciated.
