Can I move this maple?

I have, what I presume to be, a silver maple growing in my front yard. The trees leaves are divided in 5 lobes and diverge into many points from there ,like a silver maple, but the are not white on the back, so I'm not entirely sure.

Anyway, a few years ago a sapling grew in our backyard in a rather inconvenient spot. My dad cut down the sapling leaving about a foot of trunk still in the ground. Each year the sapling sprouts new branches in an attempt to continue growing and each year my dad cuts them off. I would like for us to grow this tree in another part of the yard would it be possible to either cut off one of these new branches and grow a new tree or would we have to transplant the tree?

you'd have to transplant enough root to support what you move that's above ground.

Either way should work, but yes, I move volunteer trees all the time. Just dig up a good root ball with them and replant immediately.
