Butterfly bushes rescued, need help

Please help us newbies.

My sister dug up 4 large butterfly bushes and put the bare roots in plastic bags in case someone wanted them.

We are trying to rescue them but by the time we found out and picked them up the leaves were dry.

We planted them in the yard a week ago and have been giving them water, thats all we have done, we are very new.

Should we cut them back? if so how much ( plants range from 6 the 8 ft. tall )
What else should we do? I'm afraid the dead leaves are sucking the life out of whats left of the plants.
