Best way to get rid of these bushes?

Hello everyone!

We just moved into our new home and in one of the corners in our backyard we have these bushes that we really want to get rid of. I enthusiastically started cutting them with a spade and pulling them out by hand but the roots are ridiculous, so I gave up pretty fast, heehee. The patch we want to get rid of is roughly 60x60 feet, it would take forever! Here are some pictures:

Identification of these plants, and any suggestions on how to permanently remove them are much appreciated, thanks! :)

I'm sure I'll be posting a lot more in the near future, as I'm super excited about beautifying our new yard

You lot seems to be in a new area so if you see someone around with a backhoe ask them if they could give you an hour to rip the stuff out. With sandy soil and native species sometimes the roots go on forever.

I thought they looked like bayberry but the flowers are wrong.... Do the crushed leaves or the flowers have any scent?
