Small tree with needles
Can anyone recommend a small tree with needles for planting in Virginia? We want something that will self-mulch when the needles fall to the ground, but we want to keep the tree under 12-15 ft. tal. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Compacta', 'Aurea', and countless others are some of my favorite evergreens, anthough they are awl-leafed instead of needled. Many dwarf pines and spruce are available. Pinus strobus 'Compacta', Pinus Densiflora 'Oculus Draconis', Picea sitchensis 'Papoose', Picea pungens 'Fat Albert' and one of the most unusual and striking Sciadopitys verticillata (Umbrella Pine) are all worth a look. The aforementioned Dwarf Alberta Spruce does tend to have problems with spider mites here in KY, especially in the heat of the Summer, but may do alright in your area. I would say that about 50-75% that are planted in Central Kentucky end up with problems.
There are many, many options for what you are looking for, and we haven't even touched on the Arborviate, Juniper, Hemlock, etc.
