Jasmine dying or just preparing for spring? (pics)

Hi All

I have a jasmine plant outside which did well last year but recently it's leaves have turned yellow and have began to fall off. Check this out:

So my question is if this is just the tree just preparing for some new growth? or is it a goner?

We get quite a lot of moisture round these parts and I've hardly watered it in months because of this.

Thanks for the responses! :)

Most jasmines are evergreen, which means it should not be doing that. I'm guessing it stayed too wet. Yellowing is often a sign of over watering. You didn't water, but the rain did. Probably don't have good enough drainage in the container. The look of the patio under it suggests lots of moisture.

I would also take the rocks off the surface - the rocks would slow it down from being able to evaporate moisture from the surface. In dry climates that's a good thing, but when you are getting too much water, it is not.

Thanks RG!

I had a nose around after removing the rocks and the dead leaves from the pot surface. I noticed the roots of the jasmine near the trunk-part of the plant are visible. Meaning they are growing upwards...

What could this be? Excess moisture on top of the soil forcing them upwards or the pot is too small?

Could be either or both. I had a jasmine that never bloomed for five years. I finally pulled it out of the pot to look at what was going on. It was totally pot bound, I mean there was hardly any dirt left, the pot was just filled with roots. They do have big root systems and need a lot of room.

hmm ok, I've cleared the rocks and cover the soil if it rains to see if it can recover. If not, I'll probably pull it and put in another type of jasmine that I know does do well. No idea the name, but its pretty standard:

Ok so 2 weeks down the line here's the update:

Still looking a bit deadish but I think once it gets some decent sun it'll come through.
